nita to most people, and Fort Tregear, a new frontier outpost, some preliminary remarks may not seem out of place. (1) Situation.?Fort Tregear is built on the site of an old Kulii* village. It crowns one of the highest and steepest peaks of the Darjow Klang. The survey map of 1889 states the altitude of this mountain to be 5,377 feet, and the fort is on a peak about 250 feet, lower than the summit. Fort Tregear is the frontier outpost of this year's expedition; it is 44 miles distant by road from Fort Lungleh?the frontier outpost of last year's expedition. It is situated between the Lower and Upper Kolodyne River Gamps,?10 miles from the former, and 22 miles from the latter. Longitude 93?; latitude between the parallels 22? and 23?, but nearer the latter. The surrounding country consists of an interminable series of peaks and ridges, intersected by deep and narrow valleys, everywhere covered by luxuriant tropical vegetation and dense jungle. The ground in the neighbourhood of the fort is cleared of jungle, ?it having been formerly a kuki " jlium," i.e., laud cleared for cultivation by burning the jungle and utilising the wood ashes for fertilising the soil. (2) Buildings.?For several amply sufficient reasons the fort buildings were in an unfinished state when the fort was first occupied, and for long they continued far from proof to stress of wind and rain. The time for building, and the number of men employed, were very limited, hence the materials nearest to hand had to be utilised, viz.,?rough logs for floors and frameworks ; reeds for the walls; leaves for thatching
